SS-31 Peptide in Canada: Mitochondrial Research and Evidence Limits

SS-31, also called elamipretide in the literature, is a synthetic tetrapeptide investigated in mitochondrial research. For Canadian laboratories comparing research materials, two questions need separate answers: what has been studied, and what evidence identifies the material being offered.
This guide explains research context and documentation. It does not provide dosing, injection, treatment or personal-use instructions. FirstLabs materials are for laboratory research only, not human consumption.
What is SS-31, and why is cardiolipin discussed?
Mitochondria participate in cellular energy production. Cardiolipin is a lipid associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane. A 2025 review describes SS-31’s interactions with cardiolipin and discusses mitochondrial membrane organization, oxidative stress and energy-related measurements across different studies.
A proposed mechanism is not a universal outcome. The model, experimental conditions, measured endpoint and quality of the evidence determine what a result can support. Terms such as “mitochondrial support” can hide these important distinctions when used without study context.
What do researchers actually measure?
A 2023 GeroScience study examined SS-31 and ADP sensitivity in aged mitochondria, including uptake through the adenine nucleotide translocator. That is a specific mechanistic question, not proof that every SS-31 preparation produces a general benefit.
When reviewing a study, record the biological model, material identity, comparison group, exposure conditions and outcome measurements. Distinguish a biochemical measurement from a clinical endpoint. A result in isolated mitochondria or an animal model cannot simply be carried over to people.
Why a clinical formulation and a research vial are not interchangeable
The review also discusses clinical studies. Their existence does not authenticate products sold outside those studies or show equivalence in formulation, manufacturing, handling or intended use. This article makes no claim about current regulatory authorization in Canada.
A supplier’s laboratory-use label is a statement of intended use, not evidence of clinical safety, sterility or therapeutic suitability. Neither a publication nor a high purity percentage changes that boundary.
A Canadian laboratory sourcing checklist for SS-31
- Confirm the material name, requested vial size and documented chemical identity.
- Request the certificate for the offered lot, not simply an SS-31 report from another sample.
- Keep identity, purity and measured quantity separate; record tests that are missing.
- Check shipping terms and material-specific storage instructions before ordering.
- Save the original report and receiving record so later work can be traced to the material used.
The FirstLabs SS-31 10mg listing currently states that a batch COA is not yet published. That gap should remain visible: request documentation for the offered stock before treating it as analytically verified. A report from another compound or vial size is not a substitute.
Continue with documentation, not assumptions
